Bringing Tired Fields Back to Life

On about an acre of land here on Marrowstone,

we're building a small farm with the purpose

of restoring worn-out ground, feeding our

neighbors, and passing something worthwhile

on to the next generation.

For years, this land was only used to grow

hay. Over time, that kind of one-crop use

paired with neglect wears land out. The soil

gets tired, hard, and lifeless, like a garden

bed that's never been tended. Our project is

about renewing the land, and feeding people

while we do it.

We raise chickens, but instead of keeping

them in one fixed spot, we house them in

wooden coops built on wheels. Every day, we

roll those coops along the field, giving the

birds a fresh patch of grass. As the chickens

peck and scratch through their day, they eat

bugs, weeds, and leave behind manure that is

one of the best fertilizers. Because we move

them daily, that natural fertilizer gets spread

evenly across the whole field instead of piling

up in one place.

Over time, the soil comes back to life. It fills

with earthworms and beneficial insects, holds

water better through drought, creates habitat

for pollinators, and begins pulling carbon out

of the air and storing it safely in the ground.

By doing this, we are regenerative farming, that

is, leaving the land richer than it used to be

instead of depleting it further.

Do You Have Land Like This?

This tired little parcel isn't unusual, and in

fact there's a lot of land just like it here on

the island. Old hay fields and pastures that once

did their part and have since been left empty, their

soil worn thin from years of the same use. Land like

that isn't lost. With a little care and the right

approach, it can come back to vibrant life.

If you own a piece of ground you'd love to see

restored and put to good, productive use growing

food, rebuilding soil, and serving the community,

then we’d be glad to hear from you. Whether it's a

small corner or a larger field, let's talk about

what might be possible together.
